Year 1: Foundation in AI & Computing (40 credits)

Modules:

  1. Introduction to Programming & Python for AI

    • Variables, control flow, functions, OOP basics

    • On-the-job coding tasks in employer systems

  2. Mathematics for Machine Learning

    • Linear algebra, calculus, stats for AI

    • Applied in weekly work-based tasks

  3. Data Handling, Databases & Governance

    • SQL, NoSQL, GDPR foundations, DPIA basics

20% off-the-job learning: workshops, online bootcamps

Year 2: Core AI Skills & Responsible Practice (40 credits)

Modules:

  1. Machine Learning in the Workplace

    • Supervised/unsupervised learning, scikit-learn, pandas

    • Work task: develop a basic AI model with supervision

  2. Ethical & Safe AI in Practice

    • DfE-aligned: fairness, transparency, AI Act, IP

    • Case studies + DPIA project on internal employer tool

  3. DevOps & MLOps for AI Deployment

    • Git, APIs, Docker, CI/CD, monitoring systems

    • Work project: containerised AI tool for internal use

Weekly reflective journal for portfolio evidence

Year 3: Specialised AI Applications & Real-World Deployment (40 credits)

Modules:

  1. Natural Language Processing & Generative AI

    • Tokenisation, transformers, summarisation

    • Workplace case: chatbots, prompt engineering

  2. Applied AI in Industry Contexts

    • Sector case studies: health, retail, education

    • Develop and deploy a business-valuable AI solution

  3. AI Governance, Risk & Compliance

    • DPA, age restrictions, tool audits, consent models

    • Task: review internal AI tool against DfE and ICO guidance

Mentor check-ins + review board quarterly

Year 4 (Final 6–12 Months): End-Point Assessment (EPA) Phase (20 credits)

Components:

  1. Capstone Project (EPA)

    • AI system developed at work, documented and presented

    • Includes risk log, governance review, performance metrics

  2. Portfolio Review

    • Curated set of 15–20 pieces of work across 3 years

    • Includes governance documents, reflective logs, code

  3. Professional Interview (EPA)

    • Conducted by external assessor

    • Evaluates knowledge, skills, behaviours (KSBs)

Must demonstrate DfE-aligned responsible AI use

🏁 Outcome of the Programme

Upon completion, apprentices earn:

  • 🎓 BSc (Hons) in Artificial Intelligence or Applied AI (Level 6)

  • 🛡 Level 6 AI Specialist Apprenticeship Certificate (IfATE + ESFA)

  • 🧾 Portfolio + Capstone Project assessed at national standard

  • 🧠 Eligible for: Associate BCS membership, transition to Level 7 (MSc or Chartered pathways)
